Four decades of Landsat frames over the Peruvian Amazon. Meanders migrate, necks are cut, oxbow lakes are born and silt up.

What to look for

Pick one loop of the river and follow it from frame to frame. Sooner or later its neck narrows, the river cuts straight across, and the loop is left behind as a lake.
